CAMERA EXPOSURE

Produce the Perfect Camera Exposure

Both professionals and novices alike value the crisp beautiful images that are created by our cameras.† The technical side of these images is produced by combining ISO, shutter speed and aperture. This was created in Germany in the 1950′s where the perfect combination of these elements resulted in the proper camera exposure, producing the desired images.† This concept applies to both digital and film. With the option of today’s digital various setting can easily be experimented with.† This means instant results and no cost for developing the film.

The first element of camera exposure is ISO. It represents International Standards Organization. The ISO deals with sensitivity to light. If your camera is set on automatic it will adjust to the surrounding light.† This may not produce the most desirable image so you can choose to set it to manual and adjust the settings. You can determine how sensitive to light you want the picture to be.† The higher the number, the more sensitive it is.† This is also where a grainy type of image can be seen appearing as tiny dots. Balance is the key.

The idea that the bigger an opening is the more light will come through, is the concept of aperture. The diameter of the lens is controlled by an iris that can be adjusted to determine the camera exposure. If you are shooting in a low light area then the aperture would need to be fully opened. This would also mean the depth of field would be much smaller. The aperture is measured in stops of light. The numbers are 1 and 1.4 and they double as they increase. For example, the lowest setting is 1 then 1.4. The next two would be 2 and 2.8, then 4 and 5.6 as it continues this pattern.

The shutter speed is adjusted for motion. The longer it is opened the more information it can record. The shutter remains closed until the camera’s button is pushed. The speed will determine how long it is opened to take the picture. It is measured in seconds. The best camera exposure is the proper balance of the shutter speed, aperture and ISO for the effect you wish to produce. As you gain more experience and confidence you’ll want to shut down all the automatic settings and operate on manual.
