Bring Your Images to Life with HDR Photography

If you have ever had the experience of showing off your photographs only to find yourself explaining how much more vibrant and beautiful the picture actually was, then you’ll appreciate knowing how you can create images that will bring your pictures to life. Using HDR photography, High Dynamic Range, you can rapidly take several pictures of the same image at different exposures. With the use of a software program you will combine the images for a final picture with a full range of multiple dimensions and deeper colors.

The first thing you need for HDR photography is a good quality camera that has a bracketed function and multiple shot capabilities. It will need to be capable of allowing different shutter settings.  As an example, your camera would need to be able to rapidly take from three to seven shots of the same image at normal exposure, a stop below normal and a stop above normal.  This can turn a flat image of a dolphin jumping out of the water into a stunning three dimensional dance in the vibrant blue ocean with the water-drops so visible you feel as if you could reach out and touch them.  A tripod is very helpful to keep the camera as still as possible.

The camera takes the pictures but the software produces the finished product. HDR photography processing software such as Photomax and Photoshop CS4 are two of the most common programs.  The pictures are transferred into the software.† Don’t be disappointed at the first look. These images are merged together and then have to be processed through tone mapping to reveal the highlights and shadows. The HDR image is 32 bits/channel mode and will be converted into 16 or 8 bits/channel mode and then saved as a JPEG file.

HDR photography allows you turn flat images into a story that jumps out at you and brings you into the scene before you. The amount of detail that can be produced by merging the same image at different exposures is absolutely astonishing. The light and dark areas as well as the shading and details are bright, vibrant and pronounced creating realistic results. The process takes a little practice. But with a little patience you will soon find yourself a creative hdr photography genius as you work towards bringing your once single dimension images to life.
